The PMO Podcast™ Episode Summary

  The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story
This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story introduces, “Chapter 5 - PMO Tools: Establishing an Architecture vs. Implementing a Tool of the new PMO book, Business Driven PMO Setup", presented by Mark Perry, host of The PMO Podcast™." Each chapter of the book starts off with a cartoon and the cartoon in Chapter 5 goes like this. There is a picture of the vendor sales person presenting to the PMO manager and the CIO. The vendor says, “This is our new XML-based SaaS PMO 2.0 system. It does portfolio management, project management, resource management, and real-time dashboarding.” The PMO manager asks, “How does it work with the stuff that we already have?” The vendor sales person replies obviously dodging the question, “And this month, we have an end of quarter sales promotion.” Many organizations experience difficulties implementing the tools needed by the PMO. As depicted in that  cartoon, there is never a shortage of vendors eager to sell their products. Nor is there a shortage of consultants anxious to provide implementation services as well as market analysts ready to provide their fee-based analysis and commentary. But at the end of the day, it is up to the PMO to select the tools that it needs. And, it is up to the PMO to rationalize how the various PMO tools all work together and to explain how they are to be used.

  The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo
The PMO Podcast Points Memo asks, “Is it ever okay to lose your temper?” If you are like me, from time to time you might get just a little bit angry in the work place. And while you might not lose your temper with a customer or externally to your company, you might occasional let your guard down and really have a good exchange with a colleague, or a direct report, or even a boss or someone higher in rank than you in the organization. So, in these situations, is it okay to lose your temper? Most management experts would say no and advocate that you should never lose your temper. They would say that it is unprofessional; it shows that you have lost the upper hand, and it suggests that you have become emotional because you are losing the argument. Well, I would have to agree, but only partially and, let me tell you why!

  The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag
The PMO Podcast Mailbag answers a question about a project manager that prefers technical work over managing projects.
