PMO Management - Top 10 risks that threaten project portfolio management success
Project Portfolio Management (PPM) is the management of prioritized projects, programs, and portfolios within an organization. While the concepts of project portfolio management as a knowledge standard are easy to grasp and relatively straight forward, the actual implementation of project portfolio management within an organization is not and it is not a one-shoe-fits-all-sizes proposition. This presentation provides a business-driven approach to project portfolio management that features a short case example followed by a list and discussion of the top ten risks that threaten the successful implementation and adoption of project portfolio management.
PMO Management - Effective PMO dashboarding
What do executives want to see in a PMO Dashboard? How do today’s PMO Managers provide this information? What tools do they use? This presentation provides PMO Executive Dashboarding Tips and Techniques that PMOs of all shapes and sizes can implement.
PMO Management - A road map for the high impact PMOThe PMO is the bridge between projects and business. This presentation provides a business-driven approach to the PMO and to Project Portfolio Management. Highlighted is a five dimensional approach to project management that defines the roadmap for a PMO to operate in both the strategic corporate space as well as in functional departments. A practical guide supported by PMO expertise and in-depth considerations.
PMO Management - Setting up or refreshing a PMO
At the heart of Project Portfolio Management is a well run and well oiled PMO. This presentation addresses the requirements for setting up a PMO that meets the needs of both practitioners responsible for managing projects and the leadership team responsible for managing the project portfolio.
PMO Management - Practical approaches to minimize risk, ensure quality, and develop high performance project teams
Over the years much of the formal "Project Management Community" approaches to the PMO have not resulted in a high degree of success. Many suggest that there has been too much focus on theory-driven models and bodies of knowledge and not enough focus on the needs of the business. For many PMOs much of the execution difficulties encountered during and after setup has less to do with project management tools and knowledge and more to do with the business mindset and focus, or lack thereof, of the PMO. This presentation offers practical approaches to minimize risk, ensure quality, and develop high performance project teams that PMOs of all shapes and sizes can apply.
PMO Management - Establishing a PMO architecture
For many PMOs, rushing to implement tools prior to establishing purpose and processes is nearly always met with execution difficulties. In some cases, organizations might come to find out that they implemented an inappropriate tool or that the tools that they already had were all that were required. Similarly, rushing to make organizational changes can give the appearance of progress, but if carried out at the wrong time and in the wrong manner, such changes might result in confusion and inefficiencies at best and chaos and organizational mischief at worst. To avoid these calamities, an effective PMO architecture must be established.
PMO Management - Embracing Agile and traditional project management
Despite the continuing clash, rivalry, and sometimes hostilities between the traditional project management standards organizations and the enthusiasts of agile techniques that both defend to their death what they believe in, most leading PMOs seek to embrace not one but both Agile and traditional project management techniques. The benefits of this to the PMO are enormous, but to pull it off requires a PMO mind set and best practice framework that provides both structure and flexibility within structure. Additionally, a true commitment to continuous improvement and cross methodology collaboration and development, as opposed to flag waiving, is essential for success.
PMO Management - MBWA 2.0
PMOs are inherently servant organizations. However, few PMOs exhibit servant leadership behaviors and characteristics such as Managing By Walking Around (MBWA), situational leadership, and effective use of collaborative technology. This presentation presents perspectives, challenges, and recommendations to successfully establish a culture of servant leadership within the PMO.
PMO Management - Project Management Servant Leadership
Project managers are natural servant leaders. Typically, project managers do not exercise positional authority and power; rather they seek to listen, think, and persuade others to a call of action and to a commitment to honor that call of action. Conventional leadership tells us that it is all about the hero. But, heroes as a business strategy do not scale well. In fact, as organizations mature they quickly come to realize that hero worship is the tell-tale sign of a process defect. An alternative to the hero-based thinking about leadership is the servant-leadership model - for PMOs and project managers, there is no better leadership model in terms of techniques and end results.
